Sam & Max Episode 202

Game: "Moai Better Blues" (2008)

What an entertaining place is Easter Island with the usual sparkling graphics and plenty of things to look at and fiddle around with. The island is in jeopardy, there's a volcano about to explode, and a prophecy for Sam & Max to fulfil. After the appearance of the triangle most of the gameplay is on Easter Island, and there are more triangles to come. The puzzling in this episode depends a lot on manipulating the environment. Playing with the triangles for starters, they help out a lot. There are items to find too, and a bucking surfboard to ride, plus the faithful driving interlude, which is hilarious rather than hard. Most people are babies because of the Fountain of Youth.

The Secret of NIMH

Movie: (1982)

In his book, Robert C. O'Brien called his brave widow mouse "Mrs. Frisby," but Disney escapee animator Don Bluth must have thought kids would laugh the wrong way at that. They renamed her "Mrs. Brisby" for NIMH. That acronym stands for the National Institute of Mental Health, and the rats that live near Mrs. Brisby came from NIMH--they have strange ways. But they're the only ones who can save her house and her children, so Brisby seeks them out with the help of a humorous crow (Dom DeLuise). The magic gets laid on a little thick but this is Don Bluth's most successful attempt to achieve a complete, sincere, animated film. It's often forgotten, but it's a true surprise and a rare treat in the vast wasteland of insubstantial children's fare. (The injection the rats and mice are given slows the aging process) (AS)

This action-packed second novel in a series features the somewhat-jaded but dashing 'Rune Erikson', who enters a steamy world of scintillating Balinese myths and legends. He is caught up in the middle of an adventure where the ruthless winner takes all. Rune enlists the aid of his stockbroker buddy, Logan, in a race against time where the prizes are a stolen fortune, a missing brother, and the mother lode of gold. Coloured by romance and eroticism, this intrigue entices Rune off his sailing ketch 'Valhalla' in Victoria's Fisherman's Wharf into the arms of beguiling Asian beauties on the exotic tropical island of Bali. [Now he was but a toddler. The earthen jug slipped out of his hands and crashed into pieces on the ground. His clothes sagged comically around his now-tiny body. He looked around, panic-stricken. Frightened, he let out a shrill cry...]

Shangri-la: The Return to the World of Lost Horizon

Book

Hugh Conway, who jumped ship while amnesiac at the end of the original book, recovered his memory and returned to Shangri-La, we learn, to become the High Lama. That was just as well, because in 1966 a Chinese General Zhang, with a pro-Tibetan daughter and a son fanatically involved in the Red Guard, seeks out Shangri-La for its rich supply of highly salable Tibetan art. Conway has to leave Shangri-La, risking normal aging, to confound the general's plans. Conway may stay only ten days in the outside world without aging, but in that time he falls in love with a young girl, Zhang's daughter, Ma Li. Ma Li recalls the entire story from the vantage point of a saner time, 2007, before she embarks on her own, late-life quest for Shangri-La and her lost lover.

She Went Pop

Music Video Iam Siam (1983).

This rarely seen video, apparently about the life and death of Marilyn Monroe, is by an all-girl group.

(The video uses so many quick cuts and costume changes that it's impossible to tell how many women make up Iam Siam.) Late in the video, an infant is shown being nurtured by a group of adult men. In quick cuts, we see the baby growing rapidly into a child, then a pre-teen, then a young teen, and then a young adult woman, as the same men appear to prepare her for stardom. Simon Drudd

Comic Book Character: (5 ft. 9 in)

The elderly Simon Drudd was a chemist trying to create a “youth serum”. Using all sources, from the legendary formulas of the ancients to the most modern medical findings, Drudd, and his assistant Bentley, struggled onward, despite the growing ridicule from colleagues and the public. One day, Drudd cried out in triumph that he finally had the correct chemical formula. Drudd ordered Bentley, at gunpoint, into the freezer. Drudd then revealed that he always intended to use the formula only on himself for his own selfish purposes; planning to take the serum every twenty years, he planned to become immortal. Drudd drank the serum, becoming younger and younger. From old man, to young man, to teenager, to boy, to infant, Drudd continued getting younger. The police arrived and freed Bentley from the freezer; going into the lab, they found an empty pile of clothes, the only thing remaining of Simon Drudd.

Comment: Speculation - Drudd’s “youth serum” may have been an unstable variant of the immortality elixir used by the evil alchemist Diablo, first mentioned in Fantastic Four # 30.

Singularity Sky

Book:

In the twenty-first century, life as we know it was changed forever by two events - the discovery of faster-than-light travel and the creation of the Eschaton, an artificial intelligence that achieved independent sentience. Four hundred years later, the far-flung human colonies that arose as a result of these two extraordinary occurrences are scattered over three thousand years of time, across a thousand parsecs of space. One such colony, the New Republic, exists in self-imposed isolation. Founded by men and women suffering from an acute case of future shock, the member-planets wanted no part of the Eschaton or the technological advances that followed its creation. But their backward ways are severely compromised when they are attacked by an information plague that calls itself The Festival. As advanced technologies suppressed for generations begin literally to fall from the sky, the colony slips into revolutionary turmoil. Help is on the way, however, in the form of a battle fleet dispatched from Earth. Or is it? Secret plans, hidden agendas, and ulterior motives abound, both on the rescue ships and among the populace of the beleaguered colony. And watching it all is the Eschaton, which has its own very definite ideas about mankind's future.

Exploring the ancient city of Atlantis, meeting an ancient race which has hidden themselves from humanity for thousands of years, and learning, perhaps, the meaning of life. Soul Traveler is not "light" reading; it is a complex book packed with ideas and possibilities which will cause the reader to think. Instead of reading it quickly, I-d recommend taking some time with it, enjoy it slowly. Allow yourself to pause and absorb the incredible storyline from time to time. Bouncing between multiple time periods, traveling the globe, Mr.Pearsongreer-s story is one of technology, fantasy, morality, and theology. For a daring trip through time, space, and humanity, I-m happy to recommend Soul Traveler. (Possible Ar/aP)

Spy Kids: All the Time in the World (4th Movie)

Movie: (10/05/2011)

Marissa, (Jessica Alba) is trying to fight a villain named Tick-Tock (Jeremy Piven), when she goes into labor with a baby girl named Maria and manages to defeat him and send him to jail. She decides to retire so she doesn't put her stepchildren or her newborn in danger or find out about her being an agent. The film then revolves around twins named Rebecca and Cecil Wilson (Rowan Blanchard and Mason Cook) who always bet and compete against each other. Rebecca has no respect for her stepmother as she think she can't replace her mother since their mother has died, and their spy-hunting reporter father Wilbur Wilson (Joel McHale) has little time to spend with them and has to go to work and has not even caught one spy.

When Earth is threatened by an organization led by a hyperion mastermind mysteriously known as "the Timekeeper" (Jeremy Piven), Marissa is contacted and called back into action by the OSS and has to take the baby with her, leaving a red-sapphire necklace (the key to the Timekeeper's plan) with Rebecca. When the Timekeeper's thugs try to break into their home, Rebecca and Cecil escape and go into the Panic Room. A video is shown of Marissa, telling the children that she is a spy. They don't believe it until their dog Argonaut talks, as he is a robot dog, and they escape in rockets and go to the OSS but then are being chased until they avoid them by throwing bags of vomit at them. Carmen Cortez (Alexa Vega) helps them by letting them have gadgets as souvenirs and wait in a room but they escape and wreak havoc around the OSS.

They later go to a clock shop as they uncover a code to where the Timekeeper is hiding and become frozen by Tick Tock but Marissa and Carmen help them by activating their gadgets and they all escape. Wilbur witnesses the fight and becomes upset, and is fired after destroying the evidence that Marissa is a spy and he is upset she didn't tell him and when he thinks he needs to helps them out.

The OSS brings back Juni Cortez (Daryl Sabara) since he is their best agent ever and they have Rebecca and Cecil stay back at the OSS so they don't cause trouble. But when the director of the OSS, Danger D'amo shows up and Rebecca notices his watch like the Timekeeper and Cecil scrambles the letters of his name saying Armageddon, they are locked in. They escape by setting Argonaut to attack mode and smashing the door. The OSS agents are all frozen except Juni because he doesn't have his badge on because Carmen threw it away. Juni uses his watch to connect to Rebecca and Cecil to get the necklace back, and he unfreezes all the agents.

However, with the end of the world pending and the necklace stolen by the Timekeeper, both Rebecca and Cecil find that they have no choice but take part in the battle. As they get some gadgets and help Marissa, Rebecca has to put her anger against Marissa aside to rescue the lives that are at stake and are able to get through Tick-Tock's minions. They stop the Timekeeper who reveals he is doing this to see his father back in time, as while working on something else, Danger got frozen as a boy and kept going back in time to see him and accept time the way it is. Once he realizes that the best way to use time is to make the most of it instead of trying to make things worse with time travel, he disables the Armageddon device and leaves the premises an older and wiser man. Rebecca tells Marissa that she and Cecil are her kids and "the best spies ever". Wilbur handcuffs Tick-Tock, knocks out his minions, and Argonaut comes with Maria. When Tick-Tock tries to charge Maria she flips him over her head and ends up with Marissa saying "Baby's first bad guy". [1] Rebecca and Cecil both say to the audience "You are activated." She finds herself with a boy - apparently her grandson Andrew -- who gives her a belated birthday gift. The Doctor tells her he's going to put her into the bio-temporal chamber to prolong her life. She's in the Morilogium, the final phase of the Ocampan life-span. Suddenly Kes awakens in her quarters, where Andrew is still working on the present that he already gave her. Kes meets Linnis, her daughter, who is married to Harry Kim. Linnis' father is Tom Paris, who is also Kes' husband. As Kes tries to take all this in she finds herself celebrating her ninth birthday with her family and friends. Andrew tells her he hasn't had a chance to begin working on her present. Bewildered, Kes tells the Doctor that she seems to be experiencing life in reverse. Consulting her medical records, Kes learns she suffered from chronoton radiation poisoning when Voyager was under attack by the Krenim. As Kes reasons that the radiation exposure may explain her condition she experiences another jump. This time she goes immediately to the Doctor, who confirms that the chronoton particles, reactivated in the future by the bio-temporal chamber, are moving her backwards in time. To stop the jumps, they must purge her of the radiation - and the only way to do that is to find out the temporal variance of the Krenim torpedo that contaminated her. Kes continues jumping back in time ... to the birth of Linnis ... and to the Krenim attack, when she was exposed to the radiation. Finding the torpedo, she notes the temporal variance, then jumps again, to a year earlier, where she warns Janeway to avoid Krenim space and gives the Doctor the information to program a bio-temporal chamber that will purge her system. As the chronoton count begins to drop, Kes experiences several more jumps, eventually arriving at her moment of conception. Just as she ceases to exist, her body is purged and she awakens back in the period in which they were using the chamber to eliminate the chronoton particles.

Stardust

Movie:

Young Tristan (played with wide-eyed vigor by Charlie Cox) vows to retrieve a fallen star for the most beautiful girl in the village, the shallow Victoria (Sienna Miller), and in his quest, finds his true love--in a true "meet-cute" moment (by Babylon-candle-speeding into the just-crashed human incarnation of the star, Claire Danes). Much of the film involves the duo's journey back home--though home for Tristan is his village, and home for the celestial Yvaine is, of course, in the heavens. There are villains, notably Michelle Pfeiffer as the vain witch who seeks the fountain of youth a fallen star can give, and the seven venal sons of the dying king of the mythical realm, backstabbing, grasping, and hilarious--even in death as a ghostly Greek chorus. While the sparks of love between Tristan and Yvaine are resonant and touching, Stardust truly succeeds as a brilliant fantasy yarn--and as a comedy with more than its share of belly laughs. Much of the humor belongs to Robert De Niro, who plays a notoriously wicked air pirate, who is secretly a bit light in his swashbucklers. Ricky Gervais has a small but memorable role essentially channeling his character from Extras, including his catchphrase, "Are you having a laugh?!" The special effects are all that any fan of Gaiman would wish for. Catch a bit of Stardust and you'll feel enchanted for a good long while.

Strange Tales #64

Marvel Comic Book: "The Secret Laboratory of Dr. Domino!" (07/01/58)

Dr. Domino was a clever con artist. Although he was actually 80 years old, he had been involved in a lab accident at the age of 21 which had apparently stopped/slowed his aging. Dr. Domino concocted a scheme to swindle wealthy, elderly women out of their money--he claimed he had developed a "youth serum" and had even used it on himself; since he was 80 years old (and all public records showed him to be such an age), he attributed his youthful appearance to the "youth serum" he created. Domino held a public demonstration "medicine show" where he had some elderly women step into a booth, close the curtain, take the "serum," then emerge, miraculously looking 40 years younger--in actuality, it was all just a part of his ploy and the old women (who were "in" on it) slipped out the back door of the booth and were replaced by younger, beautiful women wearing the same clothes. After collecting some money from his hopeful clients as a down-payment, Domino returned to his lab, where he was visited by an aged seeress. After demonstrating her magical powers to him, the crone told Domino that she had heard stories of his wonder potion and wanted some of it to restore her youth and beauty. Domino admitted to the seeress that his claims had all been a scam. Angered, the seeress placed a curse upon Domino then disappeared. When Domino awoke the next morning, he found his youthful appearance gone--his years had finally caught up with him. (AS/aP)

As Matt talks to Adrian, Clark spots an old woman who is about to be hit by a speeding truck. He flies out and pulls her out of the way just as the truck crashes into wall of the gym. Superboy rushes over and discovers an old man dead inside, wearing a jacket belonging to a young person. Superboy then goes to make sure the old woman is all right and discovers that she is Lana. Lana tells Superboy that soon after she was given a back rub by Adrian Temple in the gym, she began to age rapidly and woke up one morning with gray hair and wrinkled skin. Lana went to see Dr. Stern who took a blood sample and discovered a gold derivative in Lana's blood, he same gold derivative that Superboy later finds in Temple's office. They take the formula to analyze it, but Temple tracks them down. He tells them he will cure Lana if he can have some of Superboy's blood. He reveals he is an alchemist who uses the blood of young people and the gold formula to stay young. When the blood transfusion is complete Temple returns to his true age. While visiting a publisher of a successful book company, Jimmy Olsen gets the idea to write a book about himself and Superman in various adventures. However, this proves to be easier said than done, as Jimmy tends to write himself into a dead-end each time. His first tale ends with Superman saving Jimmy from an atomic blast, but the entire world gets wiped out, leaving them with no crimes to fight. The second story finds Jimmy transported to Camelot where he teams up with Merlin who gains powers just like Superman, but he scraps that story as well because he cannot find a place to fit Superman in the story. Further stories where Jimmy tries to find out Superman's secret identity, and another where Superman travels back in time and poses as historical strong men such as Hercules and Atlas also end up being equally as unsuccessful as story ideas. Completely stuck for ideas, Jimmy convinces Superman to take him to the future to the point where his story becomes a best seller, which appears to be the year 1959. Jimmy takes a copy of his book to the past so that he can use it to write the fated best seller.

The bookseller watches them and understands, wanting to buy the map from them, but they refuse. When they are gone, he calls Anton Arcane and informs him. Meanwhile, the couple are in a state of discord; Celia just wants Robert, but Robert is obsessed only with finding the fountain. Together they go to the Langford house where Robert tries to get Will to take them on a swamp tour to the area with the fountain. Celia argues against this. Later, Arcane dispatches Graham to search for the map, but he fails and the couple disturb him searching their room, and they soon disappear. Arcane is furious, at least until he procures the information by other means. Now he's very happy, especially since the fountain turns out to be on his land. He and Graham set off. By now, Robert, who is beginning to look older, is demented and he sets off alone into the swamp, armed with a gun; with Celia and Will following behind. As Alec watches him he sees a bizarre sight. Can it be that Robert has failed to grasp the one key ingredient of any longevity potion, and will he find it again at the fountain?

Swell Foop

Book: by Piers Anthony

"Do you think the puns will ever run out?" a character asks early in Anthony's 26th funny Xanth adventure. "If they do, Xanth will dissolve into chaos... It is mostly made of puns," another character sagely replies. And so it goes. This fantasy confection is full of puns, clever mathematical and grammatical lessons and some gratuitous sexual innuendo. Cynthia Centaur and her companions must find the Six Rings of Xanth (Fire, Earth, Idea, Water, Air and Void) in order to rescue the Demon Earth from the thrall of the Swell Foop. These rings are the only artifacts capable of locating the Foop. When they are stacked and aligned, a person who sights through them will be able to see the Foop if the stack is pointing the right way, and if that person is destined to use it. The rings also control the six known Regions of Xanth. The ring bearers, who include Jaylin, a Mundanian human girl, as well as five Xanth creatures, must use their creativity and sense of humor to find Demon Earth, or else the gravity needed in Xanth and Earth will disappear forever. Diehard Xanth fans will rejoice at this fast-paced romp, but even they might get a bit tired of the incessant panty humor. (Ar/aP)
