Elixir of youth

BW Short Movie: 9 mins:

One of several comedies built around the concept of a chemical cure for old age. This one is better than most, starring as it does the popular french film comedian, Wiffles. Wiffles is in love with a pretty young widow, but she rejects him as too old. He visits a chemist and buys a bottle of newly advertised elixir of youth. He takes a draught and is transformed into a well set-up young fellow. Not satisfied with this, he takes a few more swigs and passes through the state of early manhood, youth and childhood. Now he is far too young to marry, so the young widow sends him back to the chemist for preparation to reverse his accelerating youth. .

The setting is an elaborately conceived afterlife called Elsewhere, a distinctly secular island realm of surprising physical solidity (no cottony clouds or pearly gates here), where the dead exist much as they once did--except that no one dies or is born, and aging occurs in reverse, culminating when the departed are returned to Earth as infants to start the life cycle again. Emerald City

Book: by Arnold Schildkret (03/17/2011)

Emerald City: The New Adventures of Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz by Arnold Schildkret is a new take on the Oz tales that L. Frank Baum invented. Unlike so many of Baum’s followers who have through the years written imitations of the Oz books, Schildkret invents anew the main characters and the landscape of Oz. His conception of the Deadly Desert is especially different from that in other Oz books, as are his conceptions of Dorothy, Ozma, Roquat and most of all Uncle Henry. In addition, his book tells an exciting tale of adventure and conflict, including dangerous threats to the Land of Oz and even war. (Male AR)

Emily Davies: collected letters, 1861-1875

Book: by Ann B. Murphy, Emily Davies, Deirdre Raftery (2011)

Much of the social change that Davies witnessed--and helped to effect--was discussed, encouraged, and elicited through her personal correspondence. These letters, written to friends, allies, and potential supporters during the years of Davies¹s greatest political and social activity, reveal the evolution of her skill and sophistication as an activist. They also show the development of women¹s suffrage, education, and journalism movements from a group of loosely affiliated like-minded friends to an astute and organized political network of reformers. In these lettersmost of which have never been publishedwe see Davies struggle to understand and theorize about the role of women, cajole and encourage potential supporters, explore complexities of various reform movements, and demonstrate her formidable attention to detail in inventing and constructing an imaginable new institution. Her intensely engaged life placed Davies at the very heart of the events that transformed her era. (Possible Ar/aP)

Emma's Wish

Movie:

On her 75th birthday, Emma makes a wish to be reunited with her daughter Joy (Harley Jane Kozak) and her two grandchildren, Danny (named after Joy's brother) and his sister. As she blows out the candles on her birthday cake, an eerie wind sweeps through the dining room. As Emma stares at her son's wish ring from 1963, it feels warm on her aged hand. It reminds her of her 40th birthday on the boardwalk when her family was together. Since then, her son Danny has passed away and her marriage, so happy 35 years ago, has ended in a painful divorce. Although she cannot change the past, she would give anything to be a part of her daughter's life again.

When she wakes the following morning, she finds herself 35 years younger. Now being a young woman, along with the knowledge and experience of her 75 years, she has the opportunity to change her life. Emma is determined to make her wish come true and befriend her daughter Joy.

Emperor Mage: The Immortals 3

Book: by Tamora Pierce (Sep 1, 2003)

this third entry in the Immortals series again centers on the adventures of Daine, now 15. Because of her wild magic, which gives her a strong affinity with animals and the ability to heal them, Daine is part of a delegation sent to work out a peace treaty with a barbarous emperor whose beloved captive birds are deathly ill. Pierce continues to build on the universe she created for the Song of the Lioness series about Alanna, who's a secondary character here, and as Daine grows in her powers so does the power of the narrative. Daine's ability to communicate with animals and to shape shift into animal form is comparable with that of characters in Andre Norton's renown tales involving human-animal communication. Daine's companion, the irrepressible, incurably curious young dragon, Kitten, is appealing as a character, as is the resourceful marmoset, Zek, whom Daine rescues and takes under her wing. The climactic scenes in which Daine brings to life the bones of the long-dead dinosaurs and fellow creatures in the great natural history hall and leads them in the destruction of the castle and downfall of the emperor are truly riveting. This impressive entry in Pierce's saga will leave fans clamoring for more. Magical creatures known as Immortals never grow old or die of sickness. (Magical creatures are immortal unless killed (AS))

Encyclopedia of Occultism

This is a synthesis of two one-volume works: Fodor's Encyclopaedia of Psychic Science and Spence's Encyclopaedia of Occultism. It includes articles about modern occult magicians like Isaac Bonewits and doesn't leave out critics of the paranormal such as James Randi. Also check out the 4-vol.
