The fairy looked at Annabelle. "Honestly dear, where did you get these parents from? I'd ask for a refund if I were you. Now, about that tooth. What shall it be?"
"May I whisper it to you?"
"Well of course, dear."
The fairy waggled his eyebrows at her parents, then leaned in closer to Annabelle.
Five seconds later, barely able to contain his glee, the tooth-fairy placed Annabelle's tooth in a glittering evening bag. "Pleasure doing biness wiff ya, little lady. I can't remember when I've had so much fun. Almost makes up for the kid who barfed on me."
Annabelle smiled at the man in the dress, clutching a shiny silver dollar in her hand. "No, thank YOU! This is better than the million dollars I almost asked you for. This way my mom and dad will never fight about money again. My dad can keep it close to him always and mom can keep dad close to her always."
Annabelle flipped the coin over, examining each side closely: first her dad's face, and then, turning it over, her mom's. She ran her hands over her chest, admiring her new breasts. "Wow, these things are great."
"Yeah, they are." The fairy wagged his eyebrows once more as he leered at Annabelle.
"I'm thrilled to be 18 now. Damn, but I wish I'd asked for a car as well."
"Better luck next time," the tooth-fairy said, seconds before he disappeared into nothingness.
Annabelle slid the coin into the pocket of her jumper, pleased with the feel of it against her hip. A second later, she left the house with a skip in her step.



poem The American Dream
They passed through the seasons in a kind of gentle rocking motion, slipping over summer with a light tan, fall with a light coat, and winter with a brandy-induced glow. They made love with the regularity of a metronome, up and down, in and out, once a week, a tick and a tock, back again; now, middle C, come, wipe, sleep, repeat. The kids grew taller, rising almost imperceptibly through their clothes, bursting the seams on their must-have designer shoes. He wore his best suit nearly thread-bare, and she sewed it back together when he caught it on a nail, or the swinging bus doors. And life was calm.



Stone Skipping

Brian stood by the creek skipping stones. A smooth stone was held in his hand, his thumb rubbing against the slick blue rock. None of it was real.
The real Brian was sleeping, as he had been for many hours. It was the middle of the nights, near one o' clock, yet still his mind had a creek in one of the many crevices of its shell the brain. Brian's brain never ceased to skip stones.
With every turn a rock would skim further than before. 1-2-3-4-5. 5 skips! Each skip he slept more soundly. Soon the creek turned into a small river, staying still without flow. Then it became a windless ocean the waves were heard, yet they were not there. He continued skipping stones. 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8. 8 skips! Brian was very proud of himself. Not even his father could beat that.
What strong motivation one must to even achieve in a deep sleep. Brian felt his feet hurt. He took of his imaginary shoes, to find his feet to be a size bigger. He could see more than before making him taller. And his mind had more thought, making him smarter. He continued to skip stones.
1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12! 12 skips! He continued skipping stones.
The more he skipped the wiser he got, the more he skip the taller he got. Did he get older? Not yet, but he is still skipping.
Soon his mother shall wake him for lunch and he shall stop skipping for a couple of hours.

Too Big For My Breeches!

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Ow!" I screamed. I just fell THROUGH my bed! Yes, I know, I know, it doesn't make much sense, but I guess I was just too heavy! The bed had collapsed under my weight. I don't know how, but apparently I grew 10 times heavier! So I weigh, let's see, 800 pounds! Woah!
I walked to my mirror. Actually, I crawled, because I wouldn't fit standing up; I grew to 50 feet tall! I looked at myself. "Oh my gosh! I'm 100 years old! It must be another symptom of this 'everything-is-10-times-larger' disease." I looked closer at my reflection and yelled,"Oh no! I have 100 wrinkles, my back is hunched over, and owwwww! Yup, arthritis!"
Being old doesn't feel good at all. Everyone else I know wants to live to be 100 years old, but they would change their minds faster than you can say "Jack Robinson", if only they knew how it feels! "Grooooaaaannnn!"
I sat down and began to cry, when I noticed that my hair was 140 inches long! That's 11 feet, 8 inches! I always wanted long hair, but this, this is TOO much!
Now, you might be wondering why everything about me is 10 times larger. Well, to tell you the truth, I don't know! Nothing else changed, like the size of my room for example. (Which is why I keep hitting my head on the ceiling.) So why is this happening to ME and only ME? Is it some "un-natural force", or... wait a minute...let me check the calendar... yup, I was right! It's Friday the 13th! Darn! I guess I won't be my normal self until tomorrow. Oh well.
At least today is a snow day! I could make some REALLY big snow angels outside, but how will I get out of the house? I probably won't fit through the door or the window or even the chimney! Well, I could just scare my brother... yeah, that would be fun!
Maybe next year, on Friday 13, 2002, I'll be 10 times smaller. I might be as light as light as a feather, a dwarf, a baby, and I'd be bald! Weird! If that did happen, and considering what is happening today, I might be called the "Unluckiest Person on Earth"!
